What to Check Before Replacing a Failed Turbo
Before ordering another turbo, find out why the old one failed. An oil-supply problem, blocked breather or foreign object can damage the replacement just as quickly.
Smoke, noise or low boost also need proper diagnosis. They can come from faults elsewhere in the engine or boost system.
Start with the symptoms
Record when the problem happens, any fault codes, oil consumption and recent work or tuning changes. Give your workshop that information before parts are removed. With heavy smoke, sudden oil loss or a new grinding noise, stop driving and arrange an inspection.
Check these systems
- Oil supply: check the oil level, correct oil specification, service history, oil pressure and feed line. A line can look fine outside and be restricted inside.
- Oil drain and breather: check for a blocked or damaged return line and excessive crankcase pressure. Oil leaking through the turbo can be a drainage or engine-breathing problem.
- Air intake and intercooler: check the filter, intake pipework, boost hoses, clamps and intercooler for restrictions, leaks, oil and debris.
- Exhaust: check for leaks and restrictions, including the catalytic converter or DPF where fitted. Fix the underlying fault using the vehicle manufacturer's procedure.
- Boost control: inspect the relevant pressure or vacuum hoses, control valve, wiring, connectors and actuator operation. A fault code alone doesn't prove the turbo needs replacing.
- Engine condition and setup: investigate fuel-system faults, excessive blow-by, overheating and unsuitable boost or tuning changes.
Deal with the damage left behind
If the old turbo has lost wheel material or put oil into the intake, the affected pipework and intercooler need careful assessment before the engine runs again. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning or replacement requirements; don't assume a quick flush removes trapped metal.
Keep photos and the old parts available for inspection. Once the cause has been identified and corrected, use our replacement turbo fitting checklist to prepare for installation.
