A wastegate controls turbo speed and boost by allowing some exhaust gas to bypass the turbine. The right setup depends on the turbo, manifold, engine and boost target.

Internal wastegates

An internal wastegate has a bypass valve built into the turbine housing. An actuator operates the valve. Depending on the application, that actuator may be pressure-operated or electronically controlled.

This keeps the installation compact and can work well for factory replacements and performance builds. Its suitability depends on the actual bypass capacity and control system.

External wastegates

An external wastegate is a separate valve connected to the exhaust path before the turbine. It gives a custom build more choice over the valve, mounting position and control arrangement.

The installation needs a suitable manifold connection, exhaust routing and space for the gate and its plumbing. Poor positioning can limit flow even when the valve diameter looks large enough.

Choose by bypass flow

Higher horsepower doesn't automatically call for a bigger wastegate. The question is how much exhaust must bypass the turbine to hold the target boost. A large turbo running low boost can need substantial bypass capacity.

Have your tuner or engine builder check:

  • Engine size, operating range and intended use
  • Turbo and turbine-housing specification
  • Minimum and maximum boost targets
  • Manifold layout, gate position and exhaust flow path
  • The spring or actuator specification and boost-control system

Boost creep needs diagnosis. A larger external gate won't automatically fix a poor flow path, incorrect plumbing or a control fault.

Where does a Boost Tee fit?

A manual Boost Tee changes the pressure signal reaching a compatible boost-operated wastegate actuator, allowing boost to be raised above the base spring-controlled level. It is a boost controller, and its plumbing must follow the instructions for that model.

It isn't suitable for every turbo control system. Have a qualified tuner confirm compatibility, safe boost limits and engine calibration before making changes.
