A turbo blanket fits around the turbine housing, the hot exhaust side of the turbo, to reduce radiant heat reaching nearby components. Getting the fit right matters more than choosing a colour or ordering by a T3 or T4 label alone.

Check the actual housing

Start with the turbo make and full model or part number, then use the blanket manufacturer's fitment guide. For a universal blanket, check the turbine housing's outside diameter and width against the specified measurements.

The manifold flange name alone doesn't tell you the size or shape of the whole housing. Two turbos described as T3 can need different blankets.

Allow for the wastegate and surrounding parts

  • Internal wastegate: the blanket needs the correct clearance for the actuator rod, lever and full movement of the mechanism.
  • External wastegate: check that the blanket suits the turbine housing and clears the manifold, outlet clamp and wastegate plumbing.
  • Oil and water lines: allow room for connections and servicing. Keep the blanket and retaining hardware clear of anything they could damage or restrict.

Some of our universal blankets are listed for externally wastegated turbos only. Check the individual listing rather than assuming they also suit an internal gate. Don't cut or force a blanket to fit unless its manufacturer specifically permits that modification.

Check the material and heat rating

Read the continuous-use and maximum temperature ratings carefully; they describe different limits. Also check whether the outside surface can tolerate direct contact with another hot component. The finish alone doesn't tell you that.

Fix oil, fuel, coolant and exhaust leaks before fitting. Do not keep using a blanket soaked in oil or fuel; follow its manufacturer's replacement advice. Follow the supplied instructions, fit it only when the turbo is cool, and check its condition during servicing. Some blanket materials become brittle after heat cycling and don't tolerate repeated removal.
